Let’s start with the basics: why use wool diaper covers at all? Maybe you’ve already heard alot about them, maybe not. Either way, I’d like to share with you my insights and experience with wool, as well as the basic info to help you get started!
Wool is ALL NATURAL and BREATHABLE. No plastics, no petroleum, just super soft, all natural fibers. And they are breathable, which means baby’s sweet skin is not trapped in the diaper with all that moisture. Air is able to continually flow in and out of the fibers, which is good because our skin “breathes.”
Wool is SUPER ABSORBENT, making it an ideal material for a diaper cover. Wool can hold up to 40% of its own weight in moisture before it feels wet to the touch (i.e. before it leaks). They aren’t called “soakers” for nothing! The cover will actually absorb moisture from the diaper inside it!
Wool can air dry between changes, and be used again and again. As long as it isn’t soiled, a well-lanolized wet soaker can be hung to dry and used again and again. Wool has a natural wicking property, that prevents moisture from remaining in the fibers. Its natural odor-absorbing, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal properties mean that wool is also very hygienic.
Wool is NOT HOT. It actually acts as a temperature regulator, because it reduces the rate of heat transfer from the body to the environment. This means wool can help keep you warm in the cold, and cool in the heat (also remember its breathable nature–imagine wearing plastic underwear in the heat!) I’ve used wool year-round in the Texas heat and I can tell you it works!
Although some wool can be itchy, MOST ARE NOT ITCHY! You certainly won’t find itchy wools in my soakers, and I explain how to choose the softest wools in my DIY tutorial package (coming soon!).
